Renewable Energy with Printed Electronics

With the emergence of more and more electrical appliances instead of gas-powered applications, we are working towards a sustainable world. Provided the batteries, accumulators and applications are sustainably produced, of course.

Producing Printed Electronics by means of rotary screen printing helps with this. Examples are printed solar panels and printed batteries. In this blog, we will discuss these applications and some of the advantages of rotary screen printing that make this production technique one of the most sustainable solutions. 

Printed Electronics for Sustainable Resources

In the world of Renewable Energy, Printed Electronics are already widely used. The best-known variant is solar cells, about which Thomas Österberg of Epishine told us in our Webinar On-Demand. He explained that the digital transformation has caused us to measure almost anything. Think of the development of cars, which used to be able to measure only speed and the heat of the engine. Nowadays, there are 20-30 sensors in a car seat alone.

All these values are measured through different sources, such as radiofrequency, heat and/or light. Rotary screen printing is used to produce these sensitive sensors for Epishine's solar cells. 

Printed Batteries for sustainable energy

Batteries can also be printed. These so-called Printed Batteries are made by building them up layer by layer. They include thin layers of insulation, but also layers that can retain and store energy. Batteries for storing energy are quite often used in combination with solar cells, as they can be used to store the energy obtained from solar panels, such as those made by Epishine. 

A major advantage of Printed Batteries when compared with standard batteries, is that the material is bendable. This means the batteries are not limited by shape or size. In addition, they are more robust than standard batteries.

Printed Opportunities for a Sustainable Future

The possibilities can already be seen in your immediate vicinity. Everything in your home or office that has a battery in it needs replacement once in a while. Producing Printed Batteries can be done quickly, relatively cheaply and without damaging the environment. This way, we can continue to use all those battery-consuming devices in the future in a more sustainable way. There is still a world to win, but every step in the right (sustainable) direction, helps our beautiful planet a bit!


Opportunities for high volumes and various shapes

It is precisely the fact that so much use is made of batteries that enables rotary screen printing to play an important role in sustainable Printed Electronics. The printing of electronics by means of rotary screen printing has some important advantages.

The word "rotation" already suggests that it is a rotary process. Rotary screen printing is therefore known to be able to produce large quantities in a short time, thanks to the continuous process. Perhaps an even greater advantage of printed batteries is their flexibility in shape and size. They can be perfectly adapted to the application in which they are to be used. battery-6602796_1280Besides the continuity and flexibility, the yield is also an important advantage, as are the low error margins. The first print will have to be tested thoroughly, but as soon as it is perfect, the end product can be reproduced in large numbers. Certainly a great advantage for products that are needed in large quantities and have to be replaced regularly, such as batteries.
